Latest Coronavirus Updates

Thursday 19th May 2022

We are delighted that face-to-face classes have now resumed across campus. We want all of our students and staff to continue feeling safe, and so the following measures are in place across BCU's campuses:

  • Social distancing is no longer in operation; however staff and students have the option of wearing a face covering when moving through buildings and public spaces.
  • Hand-sanitizing stations are readily available across campus.

BCUIC at Birmingham City University is committed to supporting staff, students and applicants through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the UK has seen huge progress with regards to the vaccination programme, we continue to review all UK government guidelines to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students.

 

January 2022 intake

We are looking forward to greeting both new and returning students for our January intake. We must, however, continue to be mindful of the latest UK government guidance, which varies depending on whether you are travelling from a red list country, and whether or not you are fully vaccinated. We can’t wait to welcome students into the UK this September in a safe and supported way. There’s still a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, but the UK has seen huge progress with regards to the vaccination programme – a key motivator for the welcome return of on-campus teaching in September 2021.

 

The UK has been gradually re-opening, and via a successful vaccination programme, over 36,099,727 people have already received the second dose of their COVID-19 vaccine. (coronavirus.data.gov.uk, August 2021).

 

We plan to teach face-to-face from September, however we need to be flexible to be able to react to changes in the pandemic and minimise any future disruption to your studies. Our student community is our priority, and we’re committed to providing a safe and high-quality educational and extra-curricular experience.

 

Friday 20 May 2021

On Monday 17th May 2021, the government announced the commencement of relaxation of lockdown restrictions as part of the roadmap out of lockdown, with all shops, indoor entertainment, attractions, and hospitality venues being permitted to reopen and gathering limits being eased and the following restrictions still in place:

  • When travelling within the UK, you should aim to do so safely and plan your journey in advance.
  • Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 30 people and indoor gatherings will be limited to six people or two households (each household can include a support bubble, if eligible).

Higher Education students were also confirmed to be able to access in-person teaching, however following further consideration from Birmingham City University (BCU) Management, it has been confirmed that Covid-19 safety precautions should still be maintained for the BCUIC May 2021 semester, and classes will still be taught online for the summer term.

There is no longer a legal restriction or permitted reason required to travel internationally. A traffic light system for international travel has been introduced, and students must follow the rules when entering into England depending on whether you arrive from a red, amber or green list country. BCUIC is fully prepared to deliver courses online for the semester (in line with Government guidance). Lecturers and support staff have a wealth of experience in being able to support students in this virtual learning environment with student courses and assessments have already been adapted for the online environment.

All students will be able to use the BCU resources below from 17th May 2021:

  • Access campus to use all facilities;
  • Visit the library;
  • Use study spaces and open IT access areas across campus;
  • Visit the Students’ Union and the Eagle & Ball pub.

On Monday 4 January, further COVID-19 restrictions were announced across England, Wales, and Scotland. These restrictions include the move to online teaching for all schools, colleges, and universities.

BCUIC is fully prepared to deliver courses online until at least mid-February (in line with Government guidance). Lecturers and support staff are already putting in place plans to move teaching fully online, with as little disruption to study as possible. Student courses and assessments have already been adapted for the online environment.

New students in the UK, or in transit, are strongly encouraged to contact BCUIC as soon as possible for support and guidance.

An important message for BCUIC students who will be joining us this January for their studies:  

The UK Government has announced that Birmingham shifted under Tier 3 COVID-19 restrictions from 2 December 2020. Please see the FAQs below on what this means if you are due to start your studies this January. 

 

Q: I have an offer to start my studies in January 2021, however I am worried about the rise of the infection rate in the UK. Will anything be different?  

 

A: We will be running our classes via dual delivery. This means that you can opt to study the first semester online if you are worried about travelling to the UK. Alternatively, the admissions team are still issuing CAS for those who would like to study via face-to-face teaching on campus.  BCUIC is still committing to a blended approach to teaching for the next semester. By blended learning, students will learn via a combination of teaching methods – these include the traditional face-to-face teaching on-campus, as well as online learning via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and Zoom. This blended learning approach will enable social distancing and ensure we are able to create a safe and comfortable environment.

 

We are monitoring the situation closely with the government guidance and are well-equipped to deal with shifting to online teaching if required. 

  

Q: What if I start my studies online and then receive a visa refusal?

 

A: Our student insurance policy allows for a claim in relation to a UK Student Route visa refusal, thereby providing increased peace of mind for families and minimising financial risk during these uncertain times.
